Industry Piracy update: SelecTV and Austar successfully launch Piracy counter measures....
22nd April 2008
SelecTV and Austar, both running Irdeto Conditional Access Encryption, have now both deployed the necessary counter measures to render the pirated 'gamma' smart cards useless. While the counter measures have been available from Irdeto for some time, Austar chose to hold off on their deployment to assist the Australian Federal Police in their ongoing investigations (see article below).
Customers who have purchased a kartu luar negeri will now have NO service. This presents a GREAT opportunity for SelecTV Dealers. These customers have all the necessary equipment to subscribe to SelecTV, except for the Smart Card. (Obviously they will require a Dish re-point to Intelsat8).
Please contact your SelecTV Wholesaler for your Smart Card Bundle Kits.

POLICE have seized hundreds of fake pay television cards in the first investigation of its kind amid fears there are up to 50,000 already in use across the country.
Federal officers yesterday raided 10 properties in Victoria, Queensland and NSW, including three in Sydney, where they seized $169,000 and several computers.
They arrested two men in Victoria, alleging they were part of a syndicate producing the fake subscription TV (STV) encryption, or "gamma", cards.
All pay television subscribers have a smart card, which decrypts the signal, inside their set-top box. Pirates clone those cards and sell them to people who already have a satellite dish. The crime carries up to five years in prison.
There have been arrests for pay television piracy under state law, but these - the result of a six-month investigation by the Australian Federal Police - are the first under changes to the copyright act that began early last year.
The head of the Australian Subscription Television and Radio Association, Debra Richards, said piracy endangered employment and investment in pay television. Many people unwittingly bought fake cards, or were sold them in car parks. "I know a story of a grandmother who said, 'My grandson gave this to me - he got it at a pub'. If someone knocks on your door or gives you a card in a pub, or, as some pirates do, target supermarket car parks, it can't be right," she said.
"We're really pleased in terms of what's happened. It sends a great message to the market that there are serious consequences to the activity."
Kim Williams, the chief executive of Foxtel, said the raids sent a message about piracy.
"Today's actions by the AFP send a clear message to the Australian public that piracy of STV is a serious crime: it is theft and will be treated accordingly."
Yesterday, Rodney Doove, 42 from Mount Waverley in Melbourne's east, was charged with making and selling unauthorised decoders since July last year. He was granted bail after appearing in Melbourne Magistrates Court and the matter was adjourned until July 9 for a committal mention.
A 27-year-old man from Sebastopol was due to face court in Ballarat tomorrow.
They are charged with making, distributing and selling fake smart cards and dealing with the proceeds of crime.

There are many exciting times ahead for SelecTV and we look forward to working with you.
Regards
The SelecTV Team
